HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM: 9 Social and Emotional Lesson Plans for Grades 9-12!
With a Focus on Technology and Social Media
The lesson guides contained within this supplemental resources are designed to be used with students in High School years (9th-12th). They are meant to be a resource for teachers and/or counselors who are delivering instruction regarding smart and appropriate use of technology. The resources were developed for schools to use as either a follow-up to a presentation by Shape the Sky\or as stand-alone materials to meet the requirements of a school district’s internet/technology safety policies.
The developer, Ryan Klingensmith, is the founder of Shape the Sky – a community dedicated to enriching the technology and online experience for kids by sharing knowledge and wisdom, and by creating a safe way of talking about their experiences. Ryan’s background in the mental health field, where he has dedicated decades to working with teens with mental health disorders allowed him to transition into schools through the Student Assistance Program (SAP). He recognized that many at-risk students were being negatively impacted by social media culture. With the collaboration of Giovanna Niccolai, a high school senior, these lesson guides were created. The lesson plans were developed as a result of surveying high school students, high school teachers and administrators, and parents of high school students. The curriculum is based upon the results of the survey and what they believed students should be taught about social media during the high school years and preparing for life after graduation.
Each lesson guide follows the same format, which includes an overview, key ideas, instructional activities, a social-emotional learning component, and assessment questions. Lessons may include an excerpt to be read or a video to be watched which will be the basis for discussion. The materials are “ready-to-use” and are designed to last between 25-45 minutes, depending on the depth of discussion the instructor permits.
These materials are designed as stand-alone lessons that can be delivered in a number of ways. First, they could be used individually, as needs arise around a specific topic; secondly, they could be delivered as a unit in a short span of time – completing them in 1-2 weeks; finally they could be used weekly or monthly.
As instructors and students work through the lessons, some topics may elicit sensitive memories or emotions. Please understand that part of the process for children to gain wisdom around using technology wisely, they must have a forum to appropriately discuss issues and have a trusted adult to help them navigate through them. The lesson guides will include resources for the counselor or teacher delivering the lesson to assist them through any “touchy” subjects. The person delivering the lessons should also use professional discretion when a topic comes up that might be better discussed with a student in private.
Instructors should always preview lesson content, activities and any links included to not only familiarize themselves with the material, but to also anticipate any issues that might arise during the lesson.
